WHY AIKIDO MATTERS

Aikido matters because it goes beyond just physical self-defense and martial skills, offering a holistic approach to personal development by teaching techniques to redirect an attacker's force. It promotes calmness under pressure, improving balance and coordination, and cultivating a mindful attitude that can be applied to everyday life situations, essentially helping individuals navigate conflict peacefully and with greater awareness.

A focus on non-resistance

Unlike many other martial arts that emphasize direct confrontation, Aikido aims to use an attacker's momentum against them, minimizing the need for aggressive force and prioritizing de-escalation.

Mental discipline

Training in Aikido emphasizes maintaining a calm and centered mindset even and especially in stressful situations, which can be beneficial in everyday life. Short sessions of “silent thinking” (mokuso) are part of Aikido practice at our dojo.

Physical benefits

Aikido develops excellent balance, coordination, flexibility, and awareness of body movement, improving overall physical fitness. We dedicate substantial time to conditioning the body and improving stretching and cardio-vascular health.

Self-defense effectiveness

While not solely focused on combat and martial techniques, long term Aikido practice can be effective against a variety of attacks when applied correctly.

Holistic approach to life

More importantly, however, Aikido philosophy encourages self-reflection and personal growth, promoting a more mindful and harmonious approach to life beyond the dojo.
